My teaching approach would focus on developing the core skills required for essay writing at GCSE and A-Level standard. Having achieved a 9 in GCSE English Literature and Language, and a high A* at A-Level, I would directly reflect on the techniques and mindsets that worked for me.

I believe through honing the skills of critical analysis, engaging in arguments around texts and gaining an understanding of language, pupils will be able to confidently approach any text and write an academic essay fit to the level of their exams. I would liase with the student before the lesson to find out which text/ issue they would wish to focus on in the lesson. If it be fitting, I may get students to write practice essays which we can then go over line by line in the lesson. Conversely I would work on essay planning, and close analysis skills. Depending on syllabus’, I may bring an unseen text to the lesson and encourage the student to work through it - something I found this hugely beneficial for developing my critical skills. I would make the learning as interactive as possible so that all students stay engaged.

Now studying English Literature BA Degree to a higher standard at University, I have found a new passion for the subject. This is something I wish to carry forward in my lessons. I am enthusiastic and more important than anything else I would want my students to enjoy their lessons.
