I specialise in biology and have undergraduate degree in Biology, masters in Medical Microbiology and PhD that was microbiology based. Genetics, cell biology, microbiology are key areas of my expertise. I aim to make lessons fun and interactive whilst providing students with the core information they need to progress. I like to get creative and include games and diagrams that show biological processes. In science I think visual aspects are really important to engage students and explain complex biological processes. I tailor lessons to suit students needs and I am aware that individual students have different ways of working that suit them best. I also believe it is important to show examples of how these scientific processes relate to real life scenarios.
My teaching experience includes supervising undergraduate students with their final year projects and also teaching in undergraduate lessons. The demonstrator role required me to teach laboratory techniques in undergraduate practical classes, making sure health safety protocols were being followed, dealing with any student queries and ensuring the students practical booklets were filled out. I also have individual project supervision experience of undergraduate final year and MSc projects. As my PhD supervisor was unable to enter the laboratory due to health reasons, I was often their only support in the laboratory. I would help develop practical work that was linked to my own research and result in a good dissertation project for the students. Other aspects of project supervision included writing easy to follow protocols, showing them how a research laboratory is run and how to use equipment.
