I have experience as an informal tutor for KS3 and GCSE level, however I am able to teach up to and including A Level. I am currently studying a BA in German and Russian at Durham University.
My lessons would be tailored to the students needs, but mostly centred around the curriculum. However, I realise that many students would benefit from extra challenges or support and I have independent resources that I would use if this is required.
I am very well-informed on appropriate extra-curricular media that students could use in their free time to enrich their study, such as films, books, TV series, music, and podcasts.
I would explain the grammatical and technical concepts in English, but would encourage a conversational dialogue with the student in German in which they would employ the content that has just been covered. I am a strong visual learner and my lessons would reflect this through drawing out grammar tables on a whiteboard and creating interactive tasks for the student.
I am a firm believer that the study of a language requires not only academic but also cultural enrichment, and for the more advanced learners, would encourage them to i.e read newspaper articles in their free time, which could be discussed at the beginning of every session.
For students that require extra support, I adapt content to suit them and move at a slower pace. I do this by tailoring content to fit their interests, so that vocabulary and grammar is cemented in a context that is familiar to them. Altogether, I use the curriculum as a guideline, but do not strictly abide by it.
