I start by gauging their grasp on the fundamentals, then try to build confidence by going through a "difficult" problem showing them that it's a) not that hard, and b) that every step is logical and stems from the previous one (whilst also acting as something that they can work towards being able to do by themselves and a sign that they are improving), then we get into the proper lesson either working through the syllabus or if they have anything they would like to focus on, we first do that.

Saying all this, I do believe that the key part of what I do is in the immeasurables of teaching the student in a way that best suits them as an individual.
