I aim to convey mathematical content in a way that is accessible to students. I believe it is important to build slowly from the bottom when teaching new material, and will ensure students understand the fundamental "why"'s and "how"'s before moving on. This can be done through assessment and engaging the student to speak openly and freely about the material. The overall goal is not that the student will be able to rhyme off materials and formulas but that they will understand them and be able to use them in unseen situations. The lessons will always be students first, so if there is something the student feels they would like to go over we will follow their lead. The general format is to discuss the theory of a section before engaging some worked examples. With a few worked examples in their arsenal, the student will then be expected to work on a few homework problems themselves in their own time. These will not be too heavy however, as I am aware students have a lot of homework from their school teachers also. In this way, the lessons are not rushed and the student is not overloaded with information in a short period. Once the materials are satisfactorily understood we will practise past exam questions. This reminds students of the end goal. All this is done in such a way as to engage the student without alienating them or discouraging them. This is the basis we work from, and hopefully an appreciation for the beauty of mathematics can be picked up as well along the way too. I have often found this can happen when you can relate the content to a students own interests, current affairs, or historical events in some way.
