I present conversation classes and analyses of texts. In my conversation classes I converse with students on whichever topic they wish to discuss, as decided at the end of the previous class. I work according to a list of words and terms pertaining to the topic of the conversation. The student is encouraged to contribute whatever they have to say. Fluency of expression is more important to me than an advanced vocabulary.

In the analysis of text, I choose (along with the student) a suitable text, which we read and discuss together, The student is then encouraged to write up to 500 about something to do with the topic covered. We start this in one class, and the student, if need be, finishes it off for 'homework'. I also encourage the students to journal about their everyday experiences. We then discuss whichever entries they are willing to share, often using this as a springboard for ideas regarding what matter to read next. As a qualified librarian (in addition to being a teacher), I am also interested in the therapeutic use of literature. I therefore compile a list of reading matter for each student, in relation to any life challenges they might be encountering, and suitable for their level of understanding of the English language, which I 'prescribe' to them to read. I then get them to describe the contents of the book (or piece of writing) and to comment on whether or not their reading has helped them cope with their challenges in any way.
