I am a 29-year-old Italian girl, and I moved to London when I was 19. Although I worked in hospitality for many years, I also studied Psychology at Middlesex University. I then got experience working at CAMHS for a year until I decided to gain experience as a teaching assistant as I wanted to interact with children. I then realised I was not satisfied, and I studied a TEFL Course to become certified as a teacher of English as a second language. By taking this course, I had the opportunity to gain insight into different language structures and teaching methods. In addition, I would love to share my knowledge of Italian as it is my native language.
I think it is essential to have some information about my students, and I would love to add some ‘get to know games’ in the first class. I think they would create a welcoming atmosphere and allow us to get to know each other a bit. I also believe it is essential to ask the students what they want to learn. More specifically, as a teacher, I need to be able to identify the student's language goals as well as their weaknesses. Finally, for me, getting the student to express their preferences on the activities that will be developed throughout the lesson is necessary. An excellent place to start is getting some information regarding the student's daily life and hobbies, as it could be a significant input to get the class started.
I would bring at least two conversation topics to prepare for teaching my classes. There is a broad framework of options which include articles, videos, magazines, social media posts, and content found on YouTube or TikTok. I love to be creative, and trying new technology and websites could also be valuable.
Finally, I like to end my class by giving the students time to reflect on the benefits of the class in different contexts, for instance, their future, work, and life. They could then share their thoughts freely. In conclusion, I am always interested in the students' thoughts, and I would end my class by acknowledging their learning achievements of the day, which could also be an excellent resource for the following lesson. Furthermore, getting feedback on the class, involving pros and cons, could be beneficial to gain insight into the student's interests and a way to improve future lessons.
