I have been a professor of law for over twenty years and have taught a very diverse student body. I have had an appreciation for diversity and have been involved in efforts for greater equity, equality, inclusion, and justice.
I have been in the legal field for twenty-plus years, I have had the privilege to have been enveloped in a diverse climate, and a very challenging climate. I find it very rewarding to disseminate the information needed for individuals to succeed in a climate where the inclusion of all people is vital to our success as a society. While teaching any student body you must assess the strengths and weaknesses of each student while committing to making progress in areas critical to the future of each student so that they may prosper in our ever-changing and challenging world.
In this ever-changing environment, where the diversity is vast, I find it invigorating and inspiring to meet with such brave individuals challenging the unsupported critical ideas and ideals of individuals that speak non-inclusive verbiage.
My personal family is supported by many diverse cultures, American, American Indian, African, Asian (many different Asian cultures), European and other areas of diversity, such as the LGBT. I am proud of the diversity in our own personal family.
My legal work has been extremely diverse, every client is part of the human culture-we are all one in this Universe. One particular case we had in our office was from a time not all that long ago, in a small town. What happened was this; our firm represented a Spanish young man who was accused of rape, he had a white female girlfriend at the time. He did not commit this act but at the time they were cracking down on rape. The DA wanted a name for herself so she took on the case. Our firm represented the Spanish young man, what happened then, during the trial the papers published parts of the trial and most did not believe that this boy had a white girlfriend, it wasn’t possible and the defense was lying, using the white girl to gain sympathy and an edge. The boy was convicted, which was very sad, indeed. This was many years ago, yet I mention it because I have seen that now with the new movements for inclusion and diversity that there may be hope for less discrimination and intolerance. I have seen horrors first hand of the lack of empathy and inclusion and there certainly needs to be more stress on the preservation of the human species and the diversity of mankind.
