I have taught students ranging from the ages of 8-18 years old in subjects like Music, Science, and English, but English is my specialty. My lessons will focus on current/challenging work that the student may feel less comfortable approaching. I'll discuss which aspects, in particular, they struggle to understand, and first try to tackle these struggles. I am patient with students and allow them to take the time they need to understand a topic. In English, the focus on reading, literary criticism, and textual analysis are the most important components of getting a successful grade. Therefore, my lessons will allow students to develop their critical skills, reading ability, and the ability to analyse a text to a level that they feel confident in. I will look at set texts, and discuss the different elements of an essay (assessment objectives), in addition to the different kinds of questions that appear on both GCSE and A Level papers. With a student, I can help create a customized essay plan that focuses more on their weaknesses and highlights their strengths. These plans might be a written document or a more visual sheet. This would be determined based on the student's level of understanding and also their learning style. For each of the available exam questions, I would formulate one of these plans to maximise a student's ability to successfully understand what they are writing about. I will also consider setting a new goal after each session, based on what the student has achieved. These goals will be accomplishable and help with motivation.
