I have three years of experience teaching maths in secondary schools. I have worked with a wide range of students, some who have really struggled with maths as well as students who exceed in the subject. My expertise is with KS3 maths (years 7 to 9), as that is where I have the most experience. I am also able to teach maths at GCSE level, as well as primary school.
In maths, I believe that practice makes perfect, and that anyone can be good at maths with enough practice. It’s important to me that students feel comfortable and can express themselves and their needs. This allows me to adapt lessons to suit the student and to have the best possible impact on them.
My lessons are tailored to the individual to focus on topics they struggle with or feel they are weak at. I provide worked examples, which we go through together until the students feel they have enough understanding to have a go themselves. Mistakes are just an opportunity to learn, and to gain a better understanding of the topic.
I focus on building confidence in maths and giving students the skills to be able to apply their knowledge to a wide range of maths problems. I also focus on literacy in maths, as sometimes the biggest barrier is the way questions are worded! My main focus, though, is on the student and their individual needs, and communicating effectively so we both have a clear understanding of what the student is hoping to get out of the sessions.
