Having tutored GCSE students during my A-levels, I believe I am able to create engaging and interesting sessions to help students understand the tiny topics that they just can’t quite grasp, within either English literature on language. Whether that’s in creative writing, writing that tricky essay or even just getting your head round a book, I can adapt my lessons based on what you think you may need. The length of the lesson is completely up to you. Usually, I structure my lessons by having a quick chat about the text or topic, what the student enjoys about the area of study, and then moving on to smaller, more tricky details. Where possible, I try to give examples that they can correct and evaluate themselves, as I found this helped me immensely within my own learning. For the older students, I think that going through past papers with a tutor is an incredibly effective tool for learning and for getting the best possible grades, as this makes the experience so much less daunting for them when it comes to the real exams. By mixing both interactive and chatty activities with more challenging activities (such as past papers and questions), a balance is created so that the student feels engaged and comfortable within the lesson, but still feels fully engaged and challenged, but not overwhelmed. I believe that everybody has the ability to be good at English, they just might need that extra support - enjoying it is the most important thing!
