My teaching experience comes primarily from coaching wheelchair basketball and tennis for many years. This was with 11-17 year olds so I have experience teaching senior school age children with great progress and results. My lessons will have an accompanying PowerPoint and lesson plan to maintain focus and tease out key issues in a text or essay. I will use these plans to stimulate useful conversation with my students to really teach them the skills needed to succeed with their English study, rather than making them memorise facts. We will explore the wider contextual significance of texts and use them to broaden the student's worldview. We will always work to learning objectives with context given at the beginning of a lesson; we will then zoom in on a more specific piece of text to analyse it more deeply, with me partially guiding the conversation but giving the student space to formulate their own ideas. Together we will develop a mindset which is receptive and welcoming of new challenges to build the student's confidence and work towards academic independence. As a course of sessions progresses, I expect to give less input to allow the student to push themselves, although I will always be around to answer questions and discuss interpretations. Practically, we will work on essay structure and conveying a perfect message to the examiner, to ensure the student receives every mark possible come results day. I am also confident teaching literacy or phonics to younger children, my family have a background in education and phonics so I am available to students of all ages! I hope you will join me on your journey to success in English and literacy!
