I think the best way for a student to truly understand a topic is in this format. Explain, example, talk through, practice.

Explain: I will explain the topic to the student and answer any simple questions they have about it before we fully begin learning.

Example: I will show an example question with the working out and answer already done, which I will run through and explain how it is done to create some understanding.

Talk-through: I will then give a question without the answer or working out and this will be answered by me and the student together. Here I can understand where the weak and stronger parts are and help the student where necessary to try and influence the right method into place to help them with the final part.

Practice: in this stage, I will give the student some practice questions that I hope they can try to talk me through. I'd like to hear what the student thinks while answering a question so I can get a more accurate position of where things potentially go wrong or begin to fall off so that I can guide them back on track so that they begin to pick up healthy habits while answering questions.

As someone who has been a student myself I find this to be the best way for a student to have a 1 on 1 session. All of my advice will be specifically tailored to them meaning it is way easier for them to learn.
