I like to use students interests or things they like to try and link to the topic. I try to interact with my students as someone they can talk to as a friend while still being productive with their work which may allow for them to feel more comfortable when speaking to me.
During lessons I like to start by recalling previous information from topics the student has covered using a small quiz which lasts about 5 miniutes. When this is completed I will move onto the main area of focus for the lesson which the student has requested or I have picked if they don't have a specific area of improvement. The topic is explained in a manner which should make sense to most people but if this is not the case I will try my best to explain it to them in another way which better suits them. After this explanation I will go over some example questions with the student and then let them do some questions independently, during this time I will help them if they request it or if they seem to be struggling on a question.
From time to time I will use past test papers for the student to use and go through it with them which will allow for them to show their growth in knowledge and solidify their confidence in the topics they have worked so hard to learn. These tests will also allow me to see where the student needs improvement, letting me go more in depth with lessons in the future.
