I have extensive experience caring and teaching children ages 3-14 years old, and some experience teaching adults. My methods are more laid back and relaxed than one would expect from a traditional teacher, I teach as I learned, through literature, music and media, instead of the more traditional volumes of textbook.
Especially when teaching young people, I believe this approach makes learning fun and comfortable, and teaches a more practical method of communication that one would use in day-to-day instead of a more robotic and useless "proper communication" that is usually not applied to real life circumstances.
My goal is to teach history, culture and personality, instead on overfocusing on grammar and conjugation, and especially "textbook" conversation.
We begin by exploring and understanding Brazilian music, through music and poetry we can catch the foundations of language, such as striking a conversation with a stranger in line while grocery shopping or chatting to an elderly lady at the bus stop. Then, move on to the foundations of language like the (boring) grammar and conjugation, personal and plural voices and the many "why's" of the Portuguese language.
Overall, I want my students to have fun while learning. To be entertained and excited and happy to continue investing in the wonderful thing that is getting to know a different culture. I want language-learning to be more than just something you can impress your future boss with, I want it to become a part of my student's life, a part of who they are.
