When I first begin tutoring an individual, I always begin by assessing exactly what it is they need to work on, and which method of teaching suits them best (from quizzes and practice questions to mind maps and flashcards). From there each lesson can be tailored to build each skill a bit at a time. When it comes to subjects like English, we will start with basic knowledge needed for dealing with all questions, such as key language techniques; whereas subjects like mathematics will work on a topic by topic basis.
In particular, I put emphasis on the use of practice papers and example questions to show learners the best step by step process to use. Once one skill/field is developed sufficiently, I will then progressively make examples harder until they feel comfortable addressing all questions in that topic.
My lessons will always be remote, so that they are easy to slip into the learners day and integrate with their other activities. To ensure these remote sessions are still interactive, screensharing is used, and cameras are left on. I also make sure to start with a recapping activity to ease learners into each session, and get them engaged. These activities include: quizzes, key words recall, and practice questions.
Throughout all of these learning processes I am always keen to make learning as enjoyable as possible, as it is the enjoyment of learning which leads to the greatest progress. My own education has shown me the importance of loving the learning process, as it has motivated me to put in the hours needed to master a subject - particularly when it does not come naturally to me.
