The teaching philosophy that drives my lessons come from a constructivist approach. This means that I prefer to let the student I am working with discover knowledge on their own, and I am more of a facilitator. Of course, this depends on the student, so I personalize my lessons according to my student's needs.
I also ask A LOT of questions...inquiry-based teaching is something that I have been doing for 9 years with my primary to high school students. Part of the scientific method is asking a lot of questions, presenting ideas and gathering information to try to identify if our ideas are correct or not. Also, when we ask questions, we are now able to see how different concepts link together, and this is the best way that the brain can learn. Through pattern recognition and linking different ideas together. Another important thing for me is making the content relatable. Bringing concepts to everyday experiences is vital, and I help to do that.
I use online resources like short review quizzes, 3D animations and PPT presentations to present different concepts. Images and diagrams are important for biological concepts. I have access to resources that provide examination-style questions, for students who need access to and preparation for such big tests. I do not give "homework", but sometimes I do ask a "BIG" question that I want my student to think about before our next class - obviously related to our topic - and we discuss it in our next session.
Finally, and most importantly, practising the art of compassion when it comes to learning. I struggled a lot as a student trying to figure out difficult concepts. Unfortunately, I did not have teachers who were patient with my level of learning. I understand that every student is different, and some need more time than others.
