I have over 5 years general teaching experience as a classroom assistant and swimming teacher but I have just begun my tutoring journey as a volunteer TEFL teacher and would like to expand of this rewarding work.
I believe in a very student-focused approach to teaching, which means tackling the individual problems for the student before me by asking them what they have been working on before the lesson starts and tailoring the activities to suit their particular questions, needs, and goals
The lesson content will inevitably vary based on what I’ve said above and the level the student is working towards. I aim to use a mixture of materials and resources to keep the lesson engaging and effective. I do not have access to textbooks at the moment but may be willing to purchase some if I am aware of a commonly used one - though I am happy to work with one if it is already owned by the student. On the other hand, from my own time as a student I have access to a wide array of online resources from exercises to activities to past papers suitable for students of any level. Therefore, while I do think sometimes the best way to learn is by practical repetition, I know from personal experience the importance of variety to keep your brain engaged… and to prepare you for any curveball exam questions.
These lessons could offer a chance to work through any homework but I think it would be more beneficial to focus only on particular questions that may raise difficulties and give the student the skills to complete them in their own time as they would in an exam.
