My teaching style has developed over the last twenty years and experience has taught me to treat each individual learner, well … individually! I teach KS1 and KS2 English and Mathematics as well as Teaching English as an Additional Language. My preferred structure is the 'Assess', 'Learn', 'Review' and 'Revisit' approach to Teaching and Learning. Using this approach, I can tailor the learning program at an appropriate pace, whilst progressing towards agreed learning goals.
During the 'Assess' stage, the student and I would explore previous learning and identify any gaps in understanding, using appropriately levelled assessment questions. I believe the assessment process should not be exhausting or in any way stressful for learners, being pitched at an appropriate level, celebrating previous learning whilst discovering their next steps.
During the 'Learn' stage I work closely with my student following tried and tested lesson plans towards the new the acquisition of skills, understanding and methods. My subject knowledge reflects my many years of experience in the English school system. This stage often uses a mix of traditional techniques such as rote learning, and practice papers along with newly researched, more hands on approaches. For example, the use of manipulatives (objects to touch and hold) is a proven and highly effective learning strategy. I also encourage my students to learn in a way they enjoy, and I love to dance, draw and sing, I often use humour too!
Following this stage, 'Review', recaps key concepts and learning, and then 'Revisit' addresses any misconceptions. The cycle then begins again, working through objectives, building on every success. I look forward to working with you towards successful and fun filled learning!
