I have now been tutoring for almost 4 years. I started when I was year 9 and now my students' ages range from 10-16. I will always ask in advance what content will be covered in our session and attempt to find any material online that can assist in the lesson. What we do in our lessons can be very flexible, from completing school homework, revising for an upcoming assessment or exam, independent revision in weak topic areas, it's completely up to you. I tend to ensure you have a firm understanding of the concept behind an area of maths before applying this knowledge to any questions or problems. Once we have established a firm understanding of how a concept works, we can proceed to attempting those questions and problems that you will encounter outside our session, be it in school or elsewhere. With maths, repetitively attempting the range of possible questions you can come across is what allows you overall to see progress in your work, hence why this stage of learning is imperative. You are of course free to ask questions and enquire about anything you are unsure about and don't understand, and we can spend however long is necessary on those weak areas until you are comfortable in how that area works. Throughout our session, I will be asking you questions about the content to see that you have grasped the learning, which shows me you can independently handle the work.
