Before my lessons, I email both students and parents the topics/content that I aim to cover in the upcoming class. I begin my class, whether remote or in-person, with an introduction to the topic being studied. For maths and physics, I explain the concept, and then work through practice questions with the student. For English, depending on how far along with the text the student is, I spend 5 minutes talking through political and social context, and then move on to looking at the tone of the text- before looking at the text specifically. When looking at texts with my students, I use a much more interactive approach- grounded in conversation and a discussion of the text; I make notes on this and share them with my student. Additionally, for each subject I find the use of interactive games (depending on the age of the student) and videos very useful- using them for about 20/25 minutes of my lesson. I usually end my lessons (Maths and Physics) by allowing the student to work on practice questions, which we then solve together. For English, I often take small extracts from the text, and ask the student to write a paragraph about, which we then discuss. Finally, I give small amounts of homework, which is usually centred around past paper questions, which we can then go through at the start of our next lesson.
