Kitty Cooper Spice originally learnt piano the Hungarian way, following Zoltan Kodály’s techniques most known for its reference in the classic movie: The Sound Of Music. This is where she began her musical journey and gained most of her musicianship skills from the well known company Colourstrings. Spice then went on to study at East London Arts & Music, a well respected institution in the music industry opened by Chase and Status, a famous electronic duo. She left on a high, with a Distinction in an Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production. Kitty’s been playing classical piano for 15 years now but in the last 6 has branched out to jazz and pop. Her experience in the music industry; working on projects alongside Congo Natty, Chase & Status and Andrew Lloyd Webber to name a few gives her the experience to not only teach you how to play piano but also to perform and compose.
As a multi instrumentalist, producer and singer, Kitty plays piano, guitar, saxophone and flute. Therefore she also offers Music Theory and Musicianship lessons as well as singing lessons for beginners.
Kitty originally got into teaching last year when her best friend asked her to teach him how to play and she realised how much she loved the process. Up and till now she’s been running music workshops with organisations like Woodcraft Folk and Love me Black. The sessions focus on allowing children to express themselves through all forms of creativity. They teach techniques like rhythm work through clapping and sight reading but with pop songs to engage the children.
Having played piano on stages across the UK, Kitty pin pointed the key skills to a good performance pianist; dynamics, tone, rhythm , control, sight reading and a good ear. As well as having choral experience with LSO( London Symphony Orchestra)at the Barbican ,Kitty started a journey of composition in which she wrote a modern piano album with moments of ska, blues, pop, trap and reggae. Part of her teaching methods are making sure the student likes what they are learning therefore she’s super versatile genre wise and takes an approach tailored to the student. However she highlights the importance of studying heavier pieces of music such as classical and jazz as it increases one’s technical ability significantly faster than other genres.
Currently I am playing : Debussy Deux Arabesques
