In my tutoring sessions, I focus on using a range of proven learning techniques to help students not only memorise information but truly understand and apply it with confidence. One of the main methods I use is active recall, encouraging students to retrieve information from memory rather than passively rereading notes. This approach has been shown to significantly improve long-term retention and understanding, and I find it helps students build real confidence in their knowledge. At the beginning of each lesson, I like to use short, focused starter tasks based on material covered in the previous session. These activities help refresh memory, consolidate learning, and highlight any topics that may still need further attention, allowing us to set a clear focus for each new lesson.

I also strongly believe in tailoring my approach to the needs of each individual student. Early on, I ask students to identify their specific struggle areas, so I can adapt my teaching methods accordingly. Whether it involves breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts, using real-world examples, creating visual aids like diagrams, or asking targeted questions, I aim to make learning interactive, flexible, and truly student-centred.

In addition to tutoring biology students, I also mentor younger-year medical students, providing both academic guidance and pastoral support. Through this role, I have developed the skills to offer not only subject-specific help but also broader advice on managing workload, building study strategies, and maintaining wellbeing. I pride myself on creating a supportive and approachable environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, expressing concerns, and developing their skills with confidence.
