I am an undergraduate student at the University of Surrey, meaning I have recent experience of the type and format of content taught at primary, secondary and GCSE level. Having worked at the Maths & English tutoring center Kumon for nearly 2 years now, I have been able to obtain valuable skills in adapting my support methods for each individual student and implementing new study techniques to enable greater depth of understanding in more challenging topics, which can then be applied to school and exam work, etc. In my sessions, I prefer to focus on active learning rather than passively listening to theory that isn't being applied to real, relevant scenarios as these topics will be inevitably applied to in mainstream curriculum work. This involves a more interactive style of tutoring where I will take the student through appropriate questions in order to establish a clear and logical strategy for them to be able to eventually answer these questions independently. I also tend to focus on repetition to make this possible, as this allows for a particular approach to a question to become more natural, logical, and easier to recall when these techniques need to be applied. I also strive to be as flexible as possible, understanding the wide range of prior understanding each student will offer, meaning that I will pace the lessons appropriately, particularly for learners who may struggle with specific topics more, and would be willing to recap any necessary theory as regularly and in as much detail as each student demands.
