LATIN AND GREEK
When I learned both Latin and ancient Greek the most important skill was repetition and practice. As a tutor my goal is to not only help you learn key grammar and translation skills, but to help identity a way to make learning a new language manageable and - most importantly - feasible.
My lessons use translation practice to help build confidence and repeat use of vocab and grammar. This helps to identity areas you are weaker in and to help focus lessons on revising areas which need re-visiting. My lessons therefore are tailored to material you need to focus on (if you are studying GCSE or A-Level Latin), otherwise I am able to provide access to accessible learner Latin passages or original Latin texts.
Many pupils who learn Classics or Ancient History at university level may not have previously had the opportunity to learn Latin or ancient Greek, and may feel that their university does not offer courses tailored to their needs. I was also in the position five years ago, and subsequently have spent five years mastering Latin and ancient Greek and now use it daily in my research (with Livy and Polybius).
HISTORY
As a PhD student, I am experienced in the methods and skills required to be a researcher. In tutoring for history (both modern and ancient) I am able to help with common problems students deal with in exams. Source work and writing skills are important for succeeding in exam contexts. I therefore tailor my lessons around practice exam questions and the quality of written responses. This helps to improve the speed of writing in exams, make students more confident and help them build a resilient method for approaching pictural and written sources.
