The subjects I would like to teach are math and physics. I believe I’m a perfect fit for these as I have a strong grasp of the key concepts, principles, and skills related to the subject. Pursuing an honors Physics degree at the University of Edinburgh right now keeps me updated with the latest developments and trends in the respective subjects and additionally increases my confidence in my ability to convey complex ideas effectively while also committing to ongoing improvement in my knowledge and teaching skills in the subjects. Doing math and physics at university level introduced me to several resources and real-life applications of the classroom concepts which I would love to pass on to current high school students to share my excitement and make lessons more engaging. Having previous experience in tutoring, I can communicate, adapt, and support the learning needs of my students.
In high school, I took up the opportunity to tutor middle school students in India and teach them basic communication skills in English. This experience really taught me how to become more understanding of individual needs and furthermore communicate feedback with the students and their parents. Time management, patience, and empathy are just some of the skills I effectively picked up on this journey. For example, adapting to challenges risen due to the communication barriers and the different time zones and coming up with strategies to work our way around them resulted in me effectively planning my lessons and being organized and ready with the resources and materials for the classes beforehand to avoid any disruptions during the lessons. As nine months is not nearly enough time to learn a language from scratch, my student had some moments where she didn’t feel as confident and positive about her progress and felt demotivated. As her tutor, I took it upon myself to reassure her that she was doing perfectly fine and to promote a growth mindset as well. Through diagnostic tests, I recognized her learning styles, which mostly consisted of visual aids, and was able to adjust my teaching methods to suit her needs. This really helped her get back on track and continue progressing and excelling.
