My first session with a student will be an introductory lesson where I will take important information I need such as predicted grades, years of previous study and generally get to know the student. During my introductory session I will discuss how personal tutoring functions and then carry out a grade 3-4 baseline test so I can assess the needs of the student to prepare subsequent lessons from.

In regards to my planning and delivery of teaching, I will prepare my lessons beforehand by creating powerpoints that involve a 4 step teaching structure known as the ALC (accelerated learning cycle). This follows the structure of: connect, activate, demonstrate and consolidate. This means, at the start of my lessons, I’ll present a connected task of questions that mention points of the previous lesson, then once spent 2-5 minutes on this, I will present the topic and what is going to be focused on in that lesson. Once this is understood by the student, this is when I will give out a number of questions and activities to support the topic that I am teaching. This may include flashcards, 10 minute quizzes, article resources, listening activities and translating tasks. The student can pick which one is easier for them to complete but I also like to have them pick a challenge for themselves as this will help them become better at comprehending the language. Finally, during the consolidate section I will ask the student to reflect back upon what they have completed that session and take ownership over their own learning. This is where I will be able to provide feedback and go through any areas of strengths and weakness at the end of the lesson. This will also be effective for me to assess their progress on a personal level so I can plan for extra support if required. If needed and relevant I will also be able to plan and provide homework so I can encourage learning outside of personal tutoring ready for following lessons.
