I like to use a range of learning techniques with students. I think that the key is finding what works for each student which for me is what 1 to 1 tutoring is all about. Therefore unlike writing a lesson plan for a class of thirty different learners, I like to be guided by what the student finds works for them. This may include creating pneumonic devices, using pictures to dedicate things to memory, working through flashcards with a focus on information recall, or something as simple as using colour coding to keep everything in order. I am also always looking for new learning methods that I can implement into teaching. In the past, I have tutored maths foundation GCSE and I have found that a lot of students have a barrier when learning maths as it's very rigid and getting to that one answer can be hard and can affect their confidence to keep getting it wrong again and again. In this instance, I like to find where students are confident within a subject and always start there. This way there is an understanding that they aren't bad at maths and it's not too hard we just need to see why some subject areas seem easier than others. From this, I have often found a way to understand how the student thinks and can more easily adapt how I teach other topics within the subject. Being dyslexic I know that I often think about a problem in a different way and therefore I am empathic when a student thinks about a topic in a different way which can lead them to still finding the right answer.
