Hello! And welcome! Thank you for being here!
Everything is energy. Your emotions are energy in motion. So first off we’ll always do check ins to see how we’re feeling - and these can take many forms! For example, take the shape of a type of animal that you’re feeling like today or give me an abstract check in (ie I feel like a can of red bull). These approaches depend on the age, primarily. But the art of “checking in” is so important to establish at the outset how we are feeling, and can sometimes be the stimuli we use for our warmups that day.
There is then space allocated for a warmup; physical and vocal, which will prepare us for the session. Think, tongue twisters and dancing. You wouldn’t go into a gym and not stretch would you! Same applies here! Similarly by moving, we are shifting any stagnant energy and lightening our energetic load, if you will. Energy is stored in the body, and I often found with younger students with LAMDA, that if they’d had an upsetting morning and couldn’t quite articulate how they felt - simply by moving/dancing/getting out of their head and into their body, they were beaming with smiles!
Then we’ll dive into some content, looking at particular expression styles, and performance modes through a given play. We’ll explore themes, thoughts, feelings as it relates to your own sense of self in the world, and take it scene by scene. My aim is to ensure full understanding - there’s nothing worse than rushing through something you need to understand but just can’t quite grasp. We’ll do some role play in the characters, even some Hot Seating to get us thinking about their mindset and choices!
We’ll look at lexicon and syntax, and how these work together to create atmosphere and feeling, and how this translates in the world of the play. We’ll usually conclude with a dramatic reading! This is to cement everything we’ve uncovered together throughout the lesson, and bring it all together in an interpretation of your choosing.
This will be followed up with some self-reflective questions to really compound all of the above.
