I am getting my music degree in manchester, I have just come back from doing an exchange in America (Chicago) which has given me more experience and a new perspective on teaching. I have 8 months experience in teaching where I had 7 pupils ages 5-59. I achieved my ABRSM grade 8, 4 years ago. I will use all this experience to ensure my pupils come out with good knowledge of the instrument but also, most of all come out excited to play again!
Ok, now the interesting part! I will always tailor the lessons to the student, I will teach the basics like scales, the theory behind the playing, knowledge of the piano and chords, etc but I will keep it fun and exciting, I let the student choose songs they want to learn whether its a classical song, jazz, pop, metal, or folk and I will teach the techniques based around this song, sometimes I will choose a song if I believe the student will learn a certain technique better with it but mostly I tailor to the students taste! I believe this is the best way to learn as they will learn techniques and at the same time be able to play their favorite tunes! I love teaching its always been a passion of mine! I also love seeing the joy it brings people! I also believe teaching the students this way teaches them how to play with feel, I think this is so important and gets missed in a lot of lessons as many bases it around sight reading only. I teach how to sight read at a good level, but I also like to train the ear just as well.
I teach this way as this is how I was taught and I never wanted to give the piano up, it has given me experience in teaching and playing.
