Initially I like to gauge the level of understanding of my potential students. I do this by asking what they feel they are comfortable with and what they find difficult, this is then followed up by a few past paper questions to see exactly their thought processes. From that point on I will go into detail what they have done wrong and what they have done right with them to ensure both of us have a good understanding moving forward. In future lessons I will have their specification to ensure that all topics are covered. I like to draw from many other education agencies (like AQA) to make sure the student has a range of questions that they haven’t seen before. In my personal experience the best way to learn and understand maths is through answering written questions. For concepts I have recommended specific videos and/ or websites for them to personally research. I encourage the student (and/or parent) to contact me outside of the lessons with questions and any concerns they have.
For my own qualifications, I have an A in A-level mathematics and am studying Applied Mathematics and Physics MSci at Queens University Belfast. I have worked in many customer service jobs over the years and am very capable and friendly with people of all ages and backgrounds. Furthermore, every summer I volunteer at a children’s summer camp. I am a 20 year old student and can relate to many of the problems students are facing as I, myself, am facing them too.
