I had tutored Chinese for around 3 years when I was in America. All of my students are in different levels, starting from learning pinyin to writing essays in Chinese. As a language learner myself, I do believe that interest is the best teacher. This might sounds cliche but the more you are interested in the culture behind the language, the faster and more efficient your study will be. That is why I choose to use daily stuff and popular culture as my teaching materials.
For beginners, I normally use daily phrases and situations for speaking sessions. And popular culture, such as C-dramas, Chinese pop songs and reality shows for Chinese characters and listening. For intermediates and higher-levels, writing classes will definitely be included and the writing topics may vary (you are more than welcome to choose your own topic!).
For the best outcome, 3~4 classes/week is ideal for beginners, 2~3 classes is ideal for intermediates and higher-levels (It is really up to your choice though).
Hope all of you can enjoy learning Chinese, enjoy exploring Chinese. All the best.
