My method of teaching consists on understanding the student’s level of speaking and writing and personalise classes based on their needs and goals.
Conversation is usually the best way to understand the student needs. I aways like to have conversations around the subjects that brought them to my classes to make sure the students learns first what they need to learn first. For example. If the student is studying for professional purposes we will have conversations about their job, and in the mean time that I coach them about the language itself also work on their professional vocabulary needed for their profession or If the student is learning Portuguese for academic reasons we will have conversations about the subject of study and also learn the vocabulary around it.
In my opinion it is the best way of learning because it based in the real needs of the student and the reasons why the student looked for the classes and make the learning process more efficient when the student is learning what them really need. It is also the fastest way to learn and absorb knowledge when you learning something that our brain understands as needed and relevant. Specially if the student has daily contact with the vocabulary.
If the student is a music, films or TV Show lover I also will have a big list of each in Portuguese to recommend in case the student find it helpful on the learning process.
Portuguese is my mother language and English is my second language but I also speak Italian and Spanish what makes the teaching very versatile when things needs to be explained in depth.
