I find taking a personal approach with teaching a language can bring more results. Bringing the understanding of someone to a level that they can feel comfortable in conversation, and using that to then aid them learning new words and explanations of what these words mean. Often doing this with someone of another language and asking them to explain the word in their language can help them grasp this wording or meaning much easier.

Having this understanding and connection, I've helped multiple people in things like gaming communities settle into their local groups more comfortably, as they've been able to show an understanding of the language around them. Which can obviously lead into friendships, and a mutual understanding and learning as they begin to learn from others, and not just myself.

My goal is to help people learn enough that they can use the general world around them to learn, or to nurture a curiosity to seek out the information on their own, and provide confirmation. Perhaps using text that is already known in the base language to help show a translation of the English language. Or simply enjoying how different things can sound from one language to another in things like songs. Cartoon themes being the most obvious example to show translation in audible differences.

Using a friendly over a formal environment can remove the stress of feeling like learning, into passive knowledge gain instead. At least this is the information I've been told from those I've previously taught.
