I use all format of teaching, in one-to-one or group teaching. For personal tutoring (in Maths), I start with asking any topic they have issue with. This I would like to address at the start of the class.
I always enquire what they have studied in the school the week. Try to make this more understandable to the pupil. Again ensure that the pupil is comfortable with the topic.

I also undertake exam preparations - working through textbook, and sitting with the student to do the past papers.
