You will benefit from my insights into teaching at the highest levels, having studied the History of Art and Architecture as a mature student at the University of Oxford, and teaching on the university's international residential programmes. I have tutored art history, classical studies and academic writing at independent colleges in Oxford for the last 20 years and I am a qualified teacher in Further and Adult Education.
I offer one-to-one tutorials in the Oxford style, tailoring topics and support material to your specific needs. This includes training in effective essay writing, working with visual sources and critical texts, handling examination questions, giving presentations and compiling portfolios for architecture school candidates and Fine Art students.
My experience covers all A-level (and US APP) Art History options and most undergraduate or graduate topics, and also the visual arts, Roman history and classical literature options for classical studies. I also lecture for the Arts Society in Britain and Europe, which has enhanced my own understanding of art history and the canon of art in all fields.
A typical tutorial would include a review of a previously set essay, analysis of typical exam questions, discussion of a relevant critical text, and exercises in analysis and interpretation of paintings, sculpture or architecture. We would then discuss the context in which the artworks were created and the meanings - if appropriate - intended by the artists and the impressions you have after thinking about the artworks.
Typically my students gain confidence early on in our work together, understanding what the material is about, and then able to discuss it in an academically sophisticated way, raising their grades.
