My lesson aims will usually depend on which skills the learners want to practise – reading, writing, speaking, or listening, or a combination. Often a lesson plan will be based around a particular target language, and the aims of the lesson will primarily be: (a) for the learners to be able to understand how the target language is formed and used; and (b) for the learners to be able to use the target language appropriately.
I usually follow a lesson plan of presentation, controlled practice, and production. In the presentation stage, I introduce the target language and explain how it is formed and used. In the controlled practice stage, I work with the learners to practise the target language while correcting errors and ensuring understanding. In the production stage, I set the learners a task that allows them to practise the target language more independently, usually in pairs or small groups.
I understand that all learners have different styles and preferences, so I'm always happy to prepare tailor-made lessons for my students - whatever works best for you, works best for me!
