On the first session I will always try to know my students, and make sure that I understand what are they needs and objectives for our tutoring sessions. After that, I always try to make sure I know at the end of the session what is it that they would like to start working on, and make a short and long-term plan, that can obviously be revised in future session, but that will give us both a rough idea about what will be covered and how.
Depending on the length of the session (the example is for a 1 hour session), I will generally start asking for a five minute introduction on the topic from them, to once again, see where we are at. I will later have a 20-30 min presentation on the topic covering the content of the session, that I will later forward to them. After that, try and clear any questions that may have come up either before or during the class, and finally do two or three interactive activities to apply what we have been learning.
To wrap up the session, I will give them time for more questions if needed, and also some time to see what they would like to work on during the next session.
I encourage all students to give feedback on how useful the methodology used is, since everyone has different learning skills, and the ultimate goal of the sessions I to make learning a little bit easier and for everyone to feel comfortable!
