My French and Spanish sessions would last one hour and would be roughly structured as followed (but flexible and adaptable to the student's needs):
- set topics for each session
- a recap of the last lesson through a short test (including vocabulary, translation, and grammar exercises) to go through and discuss answers afterwards (approx. 10-15min)
- introductory list of new vocabulary for today's topic including 2-3 short exercises involving the new vocabulary (approx. 10-15min)
- a short text on today's topic for the student to read through and answer a few comprehensive questions to ensure the student's understanding of the text (approx. 10-15min)
- a 1-2 minute audio played with 2-3 follow-up questions to ensure the student's understanding of the clip (approx. 10-15min)
- a brief conversation in the target language to discuss the theme further (can draw ideas from the text or audio) (approx 5-10 minutes)
These sessions are designed to enable the student to practise the key components of a language (reading, listening, speaking) and develop their confidence in the target language. After a few weeks I may ask the student to write brief passage on one of the topics that we have covered (anywhere between words) to allow them to practise their writing skills, too. However, these session plans are a general structure, and if the student is confident in their speaking ability but needs to work on their listening skills for example, the sessions would then be tailored to spend more time on that skill.
