I my 2 years of experience teaching english for first time learners I would approach them to understand how much of the language style and patterns they understand as each language is constructed in a unique style to suit the tone of each language. Having said that i would normally assess my students on how much of the language they understand and move forward from there touching up on what they need to better their key speaking, reading and writing.

My most effective approach is through online videos and summarising the same in a few words. Some assessments take place through an article or story that the student finds interesting or recommended by me and summarises the same in a few words.

This method had proven to be useful for most of my students who were approaching their IELTS exam as the issues of how we write a paragraph or read through an article boils down on how we understand the language. Through this method non-native speakers of the language have become accustomed to learning and understanding what is mentioned and how to follow instructions during their undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
