Alongside a Grade 8 (distinction) in drum kit performance, I have written seven internationally published drum books. These range from original snare drum compositions, to technique manuals, jazz methodology, and coordination concepts. My approach is analytic and conceptual; when the student understands the core concept, the details come easily. I have a lot of experience working in the professional industry, both live and in the studio, and bring this experience into my lessons. Students understand why what they are learning is important, and learn to apply it in a realistic and practical way. I utilise technology, as my studio has a full audio-visual recording suite, and have guided many students through their graded exams.
I teach all styles, but have particular specialisms in jazz, fusion, improvisation, snare drum technique and repertoire, sight reading, and rhythmic theory. Lessons are tailored to each student's goals and needs, though I roughly follow my own fundamental processes for each one. I am passionate and friendly, and have as much experience working with children just beginning their journey as I do with those pursuing professional aspirations. Students can choose to specialise on the drum kit, the snare drum as a solo instrument, or work towards both.
I have a large library of drumming literature, and regularly use it alongside my own books to present the student with a rounded and comprehensive drumming education. My work is as much about drum coaching as simply teaching. I immerse the student in the community, culture, and history of drumming as much as teaching them how to play a paradiddle.
