You need just 400 to 500 words to be considered a beginner in any language. Within this set of words, part of them need to be of nouns and verbs, essential terms to build sentences. However, it’s not enough to have a wide range of words, if you don't know how to use them in your context of communication.
Hi, I am a Portuguese teacher. That means I have knowledge for planning Portuguese lessons knowing exactly what you need to learn to start a communication in Portuguese language and the path to get there. My methodology consists of gradually increasing the difficulty level. First, teaching similar words in both languages, in order to improve vocabulary. After, complex studies. I like to work with text from advertising, youtube videos, images and songs.
Beside a bachelor’s degree in Portuguese teaching, I have a postgraduate in Literature, culture and and some knowledge in Opera singing. I love knowing about cultures. I have already done a lot of trips through Brazil and some South American countries. I used to travel living a volunteering experience. In my spare time, I give motivational speeches, in my religious community, in which I teach people how to develop emotional intelligence strategies to face life's challenges. I love teaching about anything. I have been teaching portuguese since 2008 and I have been working in public administration as a tourism marketing assistant for 17 years. During this time, I have already faced several challenges in my professional life but nothing compared to teaching in education for youth and adults. Let me tell you a little more about.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
My students were young adults between 18 and 28 years old who had not finished high school yet. They were socially excluded, had low self esteem and called themselves as dumb. It was not difficult to understand why most would rather be smoking weed and listening to rap in the school courtyard than attending my classes. The workplace was an unsafe place. Just me and another Portuguese teacher worked in the evening. There was no one else. I carried on, even though I really was afraid.
So, to solve the student's absence problem in class, I had the idea of putting RAP into the classroom. The teaching strategy worked out. Bit by bit, they started attending my classes. I was happy when they discovered that the "nós é” in the lyrics of Portuguese Rap is not grammatically correct, just like "we ain't" in the lyrics of English RAP. Even happier with help they gave me the building of the project of a RAP musical show about racism that I set up to give them an opportunity to show their talents in the school Cultural Fair. They engaged people from the community to sing and perform together with them. I saw how art is a tool for education, gathering people, social inclusion, and personal appreciation—an outlet for all kinds of pain generated by violence. Seeing my students stand out as one the best groups of Cultural Fair was without a doubt my greatest gift.
My experience as a volunteer has made me a more empathetic human being, willing to listen to the needs of my students. My experience with traveling opened my mind and improved my self-knowledge skill, interpersonal communication and my knowledge about culture. My experience as a teacher taught me that some students need more of a coach to motivate them than a teacher teaching grammar.
So, If you would like to know how you communicate successfully in business meetings, in restaurants, supermarkets or some specific place in brazil, come with me and let me explain.
