After graduating with a Mathematics degree I worked at the University of Manchester for several years and also gained an MSc in Epidemiology (Medical Statistics). I have gained most of my practical teaching experience from my time in the NHS, where I worked as an information specialist. I gained a PGDip in Management at Bradford University and went on to work at all levels in the NHS, ending as the National Director for Analysis.

During that time I have taught mathematical and statistical skills to hundreds of NHS analysts and delivered degree-level research within the NHS for 20 years - concentrating on research methods, data, and critical analysis skills.

I have delivered lectures in data-related subjects to undergraduate students at Huddersfield and Bradford Universities in the UK, and Buffalo University in the USA. I was also an honorary visiting lecturer at Leeds University for several years.

In 2018 I set up my own consultancy business which aimed to teach, train, and support staff at all levels in their use of data. Since then I have delivered private analysis, data, and research training/teaching across the UK, as well as in the USA and Gibraltar to a wide mix of ages and professional groups. In 2019 I lectured online for a PhD course at Fordham University in New York. I was awarded the Northern Enterprise Awards' "Best Analytics and Research Training Provider - Yorkshire" in 2021.

I have tutored in GCSE and A'level subjects for the last 5 years both online and face-to-face. (AQA syllabus, although I have access to other syllabus material such as EdExcel).

My career experience has made me ideally placed to understand the different ways that people learn, and the areas that can be seen as difficult. The skills I have developed mean that I approach tutoring differently than those with a formal PGCE, which can be of great benefit.

Every learner is different, so I like to find an approach that works with each of my students. Having taught people who struggled with subjects at school I try to find easy examples to illustrate particular concepts. I also believe that humour is a key part of the learning environment and that learning should be enjoyable as well as educational.

I mainly deliver lessons online, although I am happy for students to come to my home if preferred. Online sessions are all recorded for the student to be able to access and re-visit particular topics. Interactive whiteboards are used so that the sessions are fully participative and these whiteboards are also shared with the student.

The typical format of the lessons will be to have an informal chat for the first few minutes and to see how the week has gone (and if anything has cropped up that they need to address in the lesson). We will then go through the concepts that are needed for a particular topic, but then spend the majority of the time working through examples and exercises to consolidate what has been learned. I go through these as quickly or as slowly as the student needs. I also allow students to make mistakes which we will then talk through to determine why they happened - this is equally important in learning a subject.
