I opt for mixed methods depending on the subject matter. In general, I will do my utmost to deliver in a manner that suits various learners.
I like to weave stories and delve into previous examples and experiences, I also like to harness interesting videos and factoids to generate conversation.
In regard to practical and skills demonstrations, I mentor the learner to learn by observing and shadowing, then encouraging them to replicate and try the activity.
My experience to date has been broad, in the sense that I have facilitated and delivered training that encompassed the most taboo of topics (for example, suicidal ideation etc) to people of all sections of society, and several years at the front of a classroom. I thrive on these environments and love to impart interesting and relevant content to all learner before me.
I do my best to create an open discussion-like dynamic within the classroom, especially when discussing human behaviour and/or psychology. These types of topics pique the interest of the learner, and I often find that they hold differing opinions which then, in turn, lends itself to lively and engaging discussion, especially when diversity is prominent within the classroom environment. I find that this approach empowers the learner to be more assertive and confident with all they do within the classroom.
One key advantage to this approach is that it gives the leather the chance to teach others too, including the teacher. For example, if teaching psychology and we touch on the end stages of life, I like to put the question to the mix of students as to how their culture feels about death, dying and beliefs. It always generates a huge discussion and many who may never have engaged with each before, finally do.
