I am an American private tutor for non-native English language students and adults looking to improve their English conversational and writing skills in 30 to 45-minute online sessions. The first lesson begins with an introductory conversation about what the student's general interests are and what they hope to achieve from our work together. Based on this information, the following lessons finish with a homework assignment to write a brief two-to-three paragraph report on an article, essay or video I have selected that aligns with their interests and goals. I encourage the students to include their own "voice" in these reports, inserting their opinions, analysis and even humor. Between the lessons I review, critique and, if necessary, correct the report for grammar, spelling, language use, structure, etc. and send it back to the student. The first part of the next lesson then focuses on a discussion of the latest homework assignment, before moving on to potential topics for the next one. With this approach, my goal is to steadily increase the student's confidence in their written and spoken English, because as someone who had to learn German as a second language, I know that doing is learning!
