My lessons are tailored to both the subject being taught and the student- our first lesson usually takes the format of a consultation where we discuss what you are learning at school, how it is taught and where you feel I can help you improve! then we work out a suitable format and schedule to help you reach your goals. they are mixed between 40% teaching Historical content, 40% essay skills and how to analyse sources and texts, and 20% fun, recreational enrichment helping to develop a broader understanding and knowledge, and improving engagement!
General techniques that I like to use that help improve analysis and writing skills include using:
- sample sentences and sections of a historical or literary text/source
- discussing what the writer's purpose is
- the theme
- how they are using techniques to create that effect.
This develops the transferrable lateral and analytical thinking skills at the core of the subject and get your work consistent top marks.
Raw skills and analysis are mixed with break elements that help you learn content! for example with History, an animated video about the event or period selected from a curated list of content creators on Youtube, who provide accurate historical information in digestible formats!
Another rest technique from the more intensive skills-based tutoring that I like to use is to talk about history unrelated to what you are studying at the moment, with an enrichment focus. for example, I have a particular interest in medieval and early modern warfare in Europe, so recounting the folk stories legends and tales of heroism of the Swiss cantons bravely resisting Hapsburg rule in the late 13th century can be a really fun way to approach history. Enjoying the subject and treating it like telling a story is the first step to really understanding it and getting intellectually involved!
I also go through pieces of homework and help students structure it and plan their approach to answering essay questions.
I look forward to working together to making history easy and fun!
