I studied Physics, Chemistry and Maths A-levels and received three A*'s and am now a Physics student at the University of York with a passion for STEM, with previous experience in tutoring.
As someone who also found classroom environments overwhelming at times and found it difficult to ask questions, I find it very rewarding to be able to provide students with an alternative learning environment, where they are able to build their confidence in the subject much quicker than in the classroom alone.
My lessons will be student-oriented allowing us to target areas that they would like to see improvement in. I would aim to instil a collaborative environment where the student feels comfortable in asking questions and making mistakes, as this is all part of the learning experience.
These lessons will be carried out online and hosted on zoom, mostly for student familiarity with the platform and the shared whiteboard tools that enhance the collaborative experience.
The first lesson will have a longer introductory period where we will get to know each other and set some goals for what they would like to get out of tutoring. This gives students control of their learning, which they may not get in a classroom environment.
A general lesson would begin with a starter to get students warmed up, then we would move onto learning/consolidating topic knowledge, to then put this into practice with worked examples first, and then finally practice questions. Throughout this process I would encourage students to walk me through their working.
My overall aim is to make students feel more confident with studying STEM subjects and improve their attitude towards it inside and outside the classroom, and hopefully this may lead to a life long passion.
