Before the session the student (or guardian) shares the subject and a handful of topics they wish to work on. This may be material you are currently learning in school, or which you have already covered and are struggling with. You may also wish to work on a type of question such as calculations in chemistry or long answer questions in physics.

In order to build confidence and skills for the exam we will mainly focus on working through past paper problems together - this allows us to locate any knowledge gaps while working on problem solving. I will ask you to offer suggestions on how to approach each problem, and encourage you to narrate your ideas to me, but our sessions will feel like a two way conversation not a test! If we come across any questions you don't know how to start, we will cover the relevant material and have another go.
Engaging in conversations like these with each student allows me to better adjust to their level of knowledge and way of thinking, and means students learn skills relevant to the final exams. This approach is based on my experiences with supervisions (essentially tutorials) at university and what has worked best for me as a tutor in the past.

I also offer advice for university applications, especially the Oxbridge and Imperial admissions processes as they are where I have experience (and success!). For students applying to these universities I can provide mock interviews in physics and chemistry.
As part of my uni admissions tutoring I offer tutoring for the ESAT (except the biological optional section). The ESAT is new and widely used by Cambridge and Imperial for STEM courses, including Natural Sciences (my degree) and engineering at Cambridge, and most engineering and physics courses at Imperial.

In order to communicate effectively online I usually have one camera facing me and another over my desk in order to share what I'm writing down. Ideally students use a similar set up (eg using a laptop and phone) or have a tablet or similar which they can write equations on.
