I tutored a private student in middle school on linear and quadratic algebra, and geometry related with plane, solid and irregular 3D shapes.
I've used flash cards formulas and formula drill before any exercise. I also do a quick test to assess how much of the concept the student have grasp and to know where more attention is needed. I also ask to what level the student have covered in school as to know which method suits the stage of algebra and geometry they are at.
For new topics, we have a proper introduction. Knowing definitions, general formulas, using simple examples, segmenting of topic into sub topics, providing solutions to simple problems and the advance to more complex problems. After thorough introduction, I give a test to know if the student really understand. If not, we go through it if possible with a different approach. When we've gone through all sub topics, I do a thorough quiz to ascertain their level of assimilation thus far. I recommend other materials the student can use to further study and perfect their skills in the topic.
I know how mathematics can be very difficult in understanding so I try to diversify and make it fun for the student. I make an analogy of how it is applicable in everyday life. For example, whenever we are solving problems on geometry related to sphere, I use an orange or a watermelon to show the height and the diameter of the sphere after slicing the orange.
