My approach is allowing the pupil to feel comfortable with me as their tutor, to really help them to be friendly with the instruments they are going to practice. I begin with, BEING SEATED, holding the bass guitar, the jack plug input, from the bass to the amplification, the volume control on the bass, the volume control on the amplification, making a sound from the instrument, the fretboard notes/scales middle C to C one octave. The pupil has to get use to this practice, in order to continue to the next step of understanding the learning procedure.
>>>> The drum-kit : the pupil learn to familiarise with the parts of the kit, the seating posture, holding the sticks, and the getting use to the right leg for the bass drum pedal, also the action for pedalling it. The timing while using the pair of sticks, right hand and left hand positioning. Counting and understanding of counting with the intention to play and keep the timing even, while listening to me indicating timing practices, using the hand clap, or clicking with a pair of drum sticks.
